OBD-II fault code

P2C0E: A Camshaft Profile Actuator Position Sensor C Range/Performance Bank 1

What it means

The control module detects that the signal from camshaft profile actuator position sensor C on bank 1 is outside the expected range or does not respond as expected.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The camshaft profile actuator changes the engine’s valve profile, and position sensor C tells the control module where the actuator is. P2C0E sets when the Bank 1 sensor C position is outside its expected range or does not respond as the actuator moves, rather than from a specified low or high circuit signal.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor offset drifted
  2. Actuator mechanism worn
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
  • Possible rough idle or stalling
  • Increased fuel consumption

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare commanded actuator movement with live sensor C position on Bank 1, including during the mid-rpm range.
  2. Inspect sensor C’s Bank 1 wiring and connector for damage, contamination, or a loose fit that could affect its reading.
  3. Monitor sensor C’s signal as the actuator is commanded through its range and check for a position reading that is offset or does not change smoothly.
  4. Inspect the camshaft profile actuator mechanism for wear or binding that could keep it from reaching the commanded position.
  5. If the mechanism and circuit are sound, test sensor C output against the manufacturer’s specification for drift or aging.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose connector or damaged wiring at Bank 1 sensor C.
  • Correct confirmed wear or binding in the camshaft profile actuator mechanism.
  • Replace sensor C on Bank 1 if its output has drifted outside calibration.
  • Clear the code and verify sensor C follows the commanded actuator position.

Can I keep driving?

Keep acceleration gentle and avoid sustained high loads because the engine may lose power or use more fuel when the commanded valve profile is not reached. Stop if it stalls or develops a major power loss.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
