OBD-II fault code

P2C0A: A Camshaft Profile Actuator Position Sensor B Range/Performance Bank 1

What it means

The control module detects that the signal from camshaft profile actuator position sensor B on bank 1 is outside the expected range or does not respond as expected.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The camshaft profile actuator changes the engine’s valve profile, while position sensor B tells the control module where the actuator is. P2C0A sets when the Bank 1 sensor B reading falls outside the expected position range or fails to follow the actuator’s movement, even if the circuit is electrically connected.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor offset drifted
  2. Actuator mechanism worn
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
  • Possible rough idle or stalling
  • Increased fuel consumption

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare commanded actuator movement with live sensor B position on Bank 1, especially through the mid-rpm range where symptoms may appear.
  2. Inspect sensor B and its Bank 1 wiring and connector for damage, contamination, or a loose fit that could distort the position reading.
  3. Check whether sensor B’s signal changes smoothly as the actuator is commanded through its operating range.
  4. Inspect the actuator mechanism for wear or binding that could prevent the position from following the command.
  5. If the mechanism moves freely and the circuit is sound, test sensor B’s output against the manufacturer’s specification for offset or calibration drift.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose connector or damaged wiring at Bank 1 sensor B.
  • Correct binding or wear in the camshaft profile actuator mechanism if confirmed.
  • Replace sensor B on Bank 1 if its position output is out of calibration.
  • Clear the code and confirm sensor B tracks commanded actuator movement through the operating range.

Can I keep driving?

Use gentle acceleration and avoid sustained high loads because the engine may not achieve the intended valve profile, reducing power and fuel economy. If it stalls or loses substantial power, stop driving and arrange repair.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
