What it means
The control module detects a circuit fault in camshaft profile actuator position sensor A on bank 1. The signal does not reliably indicate the actuator’s position.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The B camshaft profile actuator changes the engine’s cam profile, while position sensor A reports the actuator’s position to the control module. This code sets when the module detects an electrical circuit fault in sensor A on bank 1, so it cannot trust that position signal.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Position sensor failed
- Wiring or connector fault
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
- Possible rough idle or stalling
- Increased fuel consumption
How to diagnose it
- Save the freeze-frame data and check live data for the bank 1 sensor A position signal to see when the fault occurs.
- Identify bank 1 and sensor A using vehicle service information, then inspect its connector and wiring for looseness, corrosion, chafing, or heat damage.
- Check whether sensor A’s signal changes plausibly as the actuator is commanded through its range, comparing with service information or a matching sensor if available.
- With the circuit isolated as specified by the manufacturer, test sensor A’s power, ground, signal wiring, and connector continuity for opens or shorts.
- If wiring and connections pass, test sensor A and the bank 1 actuator mechanism according to the manufacturer’s procedure.
Common fixes
- Reconnect and secure the bank 1 sensor A connector; clean or repair corroded terminals.
- Repair damaged or chafed wiring in the sensor A circuit.
- Replace the bank 1 camshaft profile actuator position sensor A if it fails testing.
- Repair the bank 1 actuator if testing shows it is preventing a valid position signal.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving and avoid hard acceleration, since loss of the bank 1 actuator position signal can reduce power and may cause rough running or stalling. If the engine stalls, runs very roughly, or enters limp mode, stop somewhere safe and arrange diagnosis.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
