OBD-II fault code

P2C17: B Camshaft Profile Actuator Position Sensor B Range/Performance Bank 1

What it means

The control module detects that the signal from camshaft profile actuator position sensor B on bank 1 is outside the expected range or does not respond as expected.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The B camshaft profile actuator adjusts the cam profile, and sensor B on bank 1 reports the actuator’s position to the control module. This code sets when the signal is present but falls outside its expected range or does not follow the commanded position as expected.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor offset drifted
  2. Actuator mechanism worn
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
  • Possible rough idle or stalling
  • Increased fuel consumption

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and monitor live bank 1 sensor B position alongside actuator command when the fault occurs.
  2. Inspect sensor B’s connector and wiring for poor contact, corrosion, oil intrusion, or damage that could alter its reading.
  3. Compare sensor B’s reported position with the commanded position using scan-tool data and manufacturer service information.
  4. Check the bank 1 actuator for sticking, wear, or restricted movement that could cause sensor B to lag or report an implausible position.
  5. If movement and wiring are satisfactory, test sensor B’s output and calibration using the manufacturer’s procedure.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure the sensor B connector or repair poor terminal contact.
  • Repair wiring that produces an unstable or out-of-range sensor B signal.
  • Replace sensor B if its output has drifted beyond the manufacturer’s calibration limits.
  • Repair or replace the bank 1 actuator if wear or binding prevents it reaching the commanded position.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid hard acceleration and extended trips while the bank 1 sensor B position mismatch is present; power loss, rough idle, or stalling can make driving unpredictable. Stop safely if the engine stalls or runs very roughly.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
