What it means
The control module detects a high signal from camshaft profile actuator position sensor A on bank 1. The signal does not reliably indicate the actuator’s position.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The B camshaft profile actuator changes the cam profile, and sensor A on bank 1 reports its position to the control module. This code sets when the sensor A circuit voltage is higher than expected, so the reported actuator position cannot be trusted.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire shorted to B+
- Open position sensor
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
- Possible rough idle or stalling
- Increased fuel consumption
How to diagnose it
- Capture freeze-frame data and monitor live bank 1 sensor A data to see whether the high signal is continuous or intermittent.
- Inspect sensor A’s connector and wiring for corrosion, loose pins, broken conductors, or damage that could leave the signal circuit open.
- Check the signal wire for a short to battery voltage or another high-voltage circuit using the manufacturer’s isolation procedure.
- Test sensor A’s supply, ground, and signal wiring for opens and poor terminal contact against service information.
- If the circuit checks out, test sensor A for an internal open and verify the bank 1 actuator moves correctly.
Common fixes
- Secure the sensor A connector and repair corroded or loose terminals.
- Repair a signal wire shorted to battery voltage or an open in the bank 1 sensor A circuit.
- Replace sensor A if it is internally open or produces a high signal despite a sound circuit.
- Repair the actuator if separate testing finds it is sticking or worn.
Can I keep driving?
Drive only as needed and avoid hard acceleration; an unreliable bank 1 position signal can reduce power and may lead to rough running or stalling. Stop safely if the engine begins to stall or loses substantial power.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
