OBD-II fault code

P2C16: B Camshaft Profile Actuator Position Sensor B Circuit Bank 1

What it means

The control module detects a circuit fault in camshaft profile actuator position sensor B on bank 1. The signal does not reliably indicate the actuator’s position.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The B camshaft profile actuator changes the engine’s cam profile, while position sensor B reports the actuator’s position to the control module. This code sets when the module detects an electrical circuit fault in sensor B on bank 1 and cannot rely on its position signal.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Position sensor failed
  2. Wiring or connector fault

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
  • Possible rough idle or stalling
  • Increased fuel consumption

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and review live data for bank 1 sensor B to see when its position signal becomes unreliable.
  2. Use vehicle service information to locate sensor B on bank 1, then inspect its connector and wiring for looseness, corrosion, chafing, or heat damage.
  3. Check whether sensor B’s reported position responds plausibly as the actuator is commanded, using service information or a matching sensor for comparison if available.
  4. With the circuit isolated as specified by the manufacturer, test sensor B’s supply, ground, signal wire, and connector continuity for opens or shorts.
  5. If the wiring checks out, test sensor B and the bank 1 actuator using the manufacturer’s procedure.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect the bank 1 sensor B connector and clean or repair corroded terminals.
  • Repair damaged or chafed wiring in the sensor B circuit.
  • Replace bank 1 camshaft profile actuator position sensor B if it fails testing.
  • Repair the bank 1 actuator if it prevents sensor B from reporting a valid position.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving and avoid hard acceleration, since an unreliable bank 1 sensor B signal can reduce power and may cause rough running or stalling. If the engine stalls, runs very roughly, or enters limp mode, stop somewhere safe and arrange diagnosis.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
