What it means
The gear lever Y-axis position sensor 2 reports a circuit fault. Redundant selector position channel is unreliable.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The gear lever Y-axis position sensor 2 supplies a redundant signal for selector movement along the Y axis. The transmission control module monitors this sensor’s circuit for a fault that makes the second Y-axis position signal unreliable; the code does not by itself specify whether the signal is low, high, or out of range.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Position sensor failed
- Wiring fault
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and compare live Y-axis sensor 2 values with sensor 1 while moving the lever through its positions.
- Check whether sensor 2 changes consistently with movement along the Y axis and whether the reported selector position matches the lever.
- Inspect the Y-axis sensor 2 connector and harness for damage, loose terminals, contamination, or chafing.
- Using vehicle wiring information, test sensor 2 power, ground, and signal circuits for poor connections, opens, or shorts.
- If wiring checks pass, test sensor 2 output through lever movement against the manufacturer’s specification and replace or calibrate it if the signal remains faulty.
Common fixes
- Secure or repair loose or damaged Y-axis sensor 2 wiring and connector.
- Clean or repair contaminated or corroded connector terminals.
- Replace the Y-axis position sensor 2 if its output fails the specified circuit test.
- Complete any required selector calibration or relearn.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving if gear selection is delayed, harsh, or unpredictable, or if the transmission enters limp mode, because the module cannot reliably verify the selector’s Y-axis signal. Stop if the vehicle slips or will not select a dependable gear.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
