P08A5: Gear Lever Y Position Sensor 1/2 Correlation

What it means

The signals of the gear lever Y-axis position sensors 1 and 2 do not correlate within the calibrated tolerance.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The gear lever Y-axis sensors 1 and 2 report the lever’s position along one direction of travel so the transmission control module can interpret the selected position. This code sets when their reported positions disagree beyond the calibrated tolerance, which can happen if one sensor drifts or their harness connections have been swapped.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. One sensor characteristic drifted
  2. Harness incorrectly swapped

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and compare live readings from Y-axis sensors 1 and 2 while moving the lever through its positions to see where their readings stop agreeing.
  2. Check that the displayed positions change smoothly and consistently with lever movement, and note whether the disagreement occurs in a particular position.
  3. With the vehicle safely parked and the ignition off, inspect both Y-axis sensor connectors and the harness for damage, corrosion, loose pins, or signs that the sensor connections were swapped.
  4. Use the vehicle wiring diagram to verify that each harness connector reaches the correct Y-axis sensor and that both circuits have continuity without shorts.
  5. If wiring is correct, test each sensor’s output across lever travel against the manufacturer’s specification to identify a drifting sensor.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or correctly route swapped Y-axis sensor harness connectors.
  • Repair loose, damaged, or corroded wiring and connector terminals.
  • Replace the Y-axis sensor that drifts outside the manufacturer’s specification.
  • Clear the code and confirm both sensor readings track together through lever travel.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid relying on the transmission for normal driving if shifts are harsh, delayed, slipping, or the vehicle enters limp mode. Stop somewhere safe if gear selection becomes unpredictable, since continued driving can worsen transmission damage.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
