What it means
The gear lever Y-axis position sensor 2 reports a circuit range/performance fault. Redundant selector position channel is unreliable.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The gear lever Y-axis position sensor 2 provides the transmission control module with a redundant signal for movement along the selector’s Y axis. P08A0 is set when that signal is electrically plausible but falls outside the expected performance pattern as the lever moves, so the reported Y-axis position cannot be trusted.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Position sensor failed
- Wiring fault
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare live Y-axis sensor 2 readings with sensor 1 while moving the lever through its positions.
- Check whether sensor 2 follows Y-axis selector movement smoothly and identify positions where its reading diverges or stops changing.
- Inspect the Y-axis sensor 2 wiring and connector for damage, poor seating, contamination, or chafing.
- Test sensor 2 power, ground, and signal circuits for opens, shorts, or poor connections using the vehicle wiring information.
- If the circuit is sound, test sensor 2 output across lever movement against the manufacturer’s specification and replace or calibrate it if performance remains out of range.
Common fixes
- Repair damaged or poorly connected Y-axis sensor 2 wiring.
- Clean and secure the sensor 2 connector if contamination or looseness is found.
- Replace the Y-axis position sensor 2 if its output does not meet the specified movement pattern.
- Perform any required selector calibration or relearn after repair.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid driving farther than needed if the transmission shifts abnormally or enters limp mode, as unreliable Y-axis position data can restrict gear selection. Stop if the vehicle slips, shudders severely, or does not respond predictably to the selector.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
