What it means
The gear lever X-axis position sensor 2 reports a circuit fault. Redundant selector position channel is unreliable.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The gear lever X-axis position sensor 2 reports one channel of the selector's lateral position to the transmission control system. The module checks this redundant channel against the other selector information and sets P089A when sensor 2's circuit is faulty or its position signal cannot be relied on.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Position sensor failed
- Wiring fault
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and scan for related selector-position and transmission-control codes to see when sensor 2 became unreliable.
- Check live selector-position data while moving the lever through its positions with the vehicle safely parked, and look for dropouts or disagreement in the X-axis reading.
- Inspect sensor 2's connector and nearby wiring for looseness, corrosion, chafing, or damage.
- Check the sensor 2 circuit supply, ground, and signal continuity against the wiring diagram and manufacturer's specification.
- If wiring and connections test correctly, assess gear lever X-axis position sensor 2 and its alignment or installation according to the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Secure a loose sensor 2 connector and repair damaged terminals.
- Repair chafed or open wiring in the X-axis sensor 2 circuit.
- Replace gear lever X-axis position sensor 2 if its circuit or signal fails testing.
- Correct sensor installation or alignment if the manufacturer's procedure identifies it as the cause.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid driving if the selector position is unclear, shifts are missing or harsh, or the vehicle enters limp mode; the transmission may not respond predictably to lever selection. Arrange repair before normal use.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
