OBD-II fault code

P089E: Gear Lever X Position Sensor 2 Circuit Intermittent/Erratic

What it means

The gear lever X-axis position sensor 2 reports a circuit intermittent/erratic fault. Redundant selector position channel is unreliable.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The gear lever X-axis position sensor 2 reports selector movement along the X axis as a second position signal. The transmission control module sets P089E when this signal drops out or changes erratically instead of tracking lever movement consistently, including when a connection fails intermittently.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Position sensor failed
  2. Wiring fault
  3. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and monitor live X-axis sensor 2 alongside sensor 1 while slowly moving the selector through its positions.
  2. Look for sudden jumps or dropouts in sensor 2 data and note whether they coincide with lever movement or vibration.
  3. Inspect the sensor 2 connector and harness for loose pins, damaged insulation, chafing, or a connection that moves when gently flexed.
  4. Check sensor 2 power, ground, and signal circuits for intermittent opens or shorts while observing the scan-tool reading; use the vehicle wiring information.
  5. If the wiring remains stable, test sensor 2 output through selector movement against the manufacturer’s specification and replace it if the signal is still erratic.

Common fixes

  • Reseat or repair a loose X-axis sensor 2 connector or terminal.
  • Repair chafed or broken wiring in the sensor 2 circuit.
  • Replace the X-axis position sensor 2 if its signal drops out with stable wiring and connections.
  • Perform any required selector calibration or relearn after repair.

Can I keep driving?

Minimize driving if the selector reading or shifting becomes inconsistent, because an intermittent fault can trigger limp mode without warning. Stop if the transmission slips, shudders severely, or stops responding predictably to gear selection.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
