OBD-II fault code

P0822: Gear Lever Y Position Sensor 1 Circuit

What it means

General electrical fault on the Y-axis (forward/backward) position sensor 1 of an electronic gear lever.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

In an electronic gear lever, Y-position sensor 1 reports the lever's forward-and-back position to the transmission control module. P0822 sets when the sensor circuit has an electrical fault that prevents the module from reliably reading this vertical-axis position.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open or short in the sensor wiring
  2. Failed gear lever Y-position sensor
  3. Loose, damaged, or corroded connector
  4. Fault in the gear lever assembly
  5. Fault in the transmission control module

Symptoms

  • Gear selection may be incorrect or unavailable
  • Transmission warning light may be on

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and monitor the gear lever Y-position on a scan tool while moving the lever forward and back, looking for a missing or implausible reading.
  2. Inspect the Y-position sensor 1 connector and gear lever assembly for loose fit, corrosion, moisture, or visible damage.
  3. Follow the Y-signal wiring and check for chafing, pinching, opens, or shorts that could interrupt the circuit.
  4. Measure circuit power, ground, and signal continuity against the manufacturer's specification, observing the signal as the lever moves.
  5. If the circuit checks out, test Y-position sensor 1 and the gear lever assembly before suspecting the transmission control module.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure the sensor connector if it is loose or corroded.
  • Repair damaged or open Y-position sensor wiring.
  • Replace a failed gear lever Y-position sensor 1.
  • Repair or replace the gear lever assembly if it has an internal fault.
  • Repair or replace the transmission control module if testing confirms it is faulty.

Can I keep driving?

If gear selection remains predictable, limit driving to necessary trips and avoid relying on quick shifts. If the transmission cannot select the intended gear, stop safely and arrange recovery.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
