What it means
The gear lever Y-axis position sensor 2 reports a circuit low fault. Redundant selector position channel is unreliable.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The gear lever Y-axis position sensor 2 sends a redundant signal for selector movement along the Y axis. The transmission control module sets P08A1 when that circuit’s signal falls below its expected low threshold, leaving the module unable to rely on sensor 2’s Y-axis position report.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Position sensor failed
- Wiring fault
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Capture freeze-frame data and compare live Y-axis sensor 2 readings with sensor 1 while moving the selector through its positions.
- Confirm whether sensor 2 stays low or fails to follow Y-axis movement, and check for related supply or ground faults.
- Inspect the Y-axis sensor 2 connector and wiring for a short to ground, damaged insulation, corrosion, or loose pins.
- Test sensor 2 power, ground, and signal wiring for continuity and shorts using vehicle wiring information; examine connector contacts for corrosion or poor fit.
- If the circuit is intact, test sensor 2 output through lever movement against the manufacturer’s specification and replace it if the signal remains low.
Common fixes
- Repair a signal wire short to ground or damaged wiring in the Y-axis sensor 2 circuit.
- Clean or repair corroded or loose connector terminals.
- Replace the Y-axis position sensor 2 if its output remains below specification with sound wiring.
- Complete any required selector calibration or relearn.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving if shifting is harsh, delayed, or the transmission enters limp mode, since the module may not be able to confirm the selected position. Stop if it slips, shudders severely, or cannot select a predictable gear.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
