What it means
The gear lever Y-axis position sensor 2 reports a circuit high fault. Redundant selector position channel is unreliable.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The gear lever Y-axis position sensor 2 supplies a redundant measurement of selector movement along the Y axis. P08A2 is set when the sensor 2 circuit signal is above its expected high limit, so the transmission control module cannot trust that Y-axis position reading.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Position sensor failed
- Wiring fault
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and compare live Y-axis sensor 2 and sensor 1 readings while moving the selector through its positions.
- Check whether sensor 2 remains high or rises unexpectedly, and note the lever position when the fault occurs.
- Inspect the Y-axis sensor 2 harness and connector for a signal wire short to voltage, damaged insulation, moisture, or poor terminal contact.
- Use vehicle wiring information to test the signal circuit for shorts to power and check the sensor’s power, ground, and connector condition.
- If the circuit tests correctly, compare sensor 2 output through lever movement with the manufacturer’s specification and replace it if the signal remains high.
Common fixes
- Repair a signal wire short to power or damaged insulation in the Y-axis sensor 2 circuit.
- Secure or repair loose, contaminated, or corroded connector terminals.
- Replace the Y-axis position sensor 2 if its output stays above specification with the circuit verified.
- Carry out any required selector calibration or relearn after repair.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid unnecessary driving if shifts become harsh, delayed, or the transmission enters limp mode, because selector position information is unreliable. Stop if the vehicle slips or cannot select and hold a predictable gear.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
