OBD-II fault code

P089D: Gear Lever X Position Sensor 2 Circuit High

What it means

The gear lever X-axis position sensor 2 reports a circuit high fault. Redundant selector position channel is unreliable.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The gear lever X-axis position sensor 2 provides a redundant measurement of selector movement along the X axis. The transmission control module sets P089D when this circuit’s signal is higher than the permitted range, preventing it from trusting sensor 2’s reported position.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Position sensor failed
  2. Wiring fault
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Capture freeze-frame data and watch live X-axis sensor 2 and sensor 1 values while moving the selector through each position.
  2. Check whether sensor 2 stays high or rises unexpectedly, and note whether the fault appears at a particular lever position.
  3. Inspect the sensor 2 connector and harness for a signal wire short to voltage, damaged insulation, moisture, or loose or corroded terminals.
  4. With the wiring diagram, test the sensor 2 signal for shorts to power and check its power and ground circuits and connector integrity.
  5. If the circuit tests correctly, measure sensor 2 output across lever movement against the manufacturer’s specification and replace it if the signal remains high.

Common fixes

  • Repair a signal wire short to power or damaged insulation in the X-axis sensor 2 circuit.
  • Secure or repair loose, contaminated, or corroded connector terminals.
  • Replace the X-axis position sensor 2 if its output stays above specification with the circuit verified.
  • Carry out any required selector calibration or relearn after repair.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid routine driving if shifting is harsh, delayed, slipping, or the transmission has entered limp mode; incorrect selector information can limit gear choice. Stop if the vehicle cannot hold or select a predictable gear and arrange diagnosis.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
