OBD-II fault code

P0821: Gear Lever X Position Sensor 1 Circuit

What it means

General electrical fault on the X-axis (left/right) position sensor 1 of an electronic gear lever. Used in stick-shift-by-wire systems where the lever is decoded into X/Y coordinates rather than discrete switches.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

In an electronic gear lever, X-position sensor 1 reports the lever's left-to-right position to the transmission control module. The module sets P0821 when that sensor's circuit has an electrical fault, so it cannot reliably read the horizontal position.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open or short in the sensor wiring
  2. Failed gear lever X-position sensor
  3. Loose, damaged, or corroded connector
  4. Fault in the gear lever assembly
  5. Fault in the transmission control module

Symptoms

  • Gear selection may be incorrect or unavailable
  • Transmission warning light may be on

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check transmission live data for the reported X-position while moving the lever through its positions, noting whether the reading is missing or implausible.
  2. Inspect the gear lever assembly and sensor 1 connector for looseness, corrosion, damage, or moisture that could interrupt the X-axis signal.
  3. Trace the sensor 1 wiring for open circuits, shorts, pinched sections, or chafing, paying attention to the X-signal wire and its connections.
  4. Check the sensor circuit's power, ground, and signal continuity against the manufacturer's specification, and compare the signal as the lever moves.
  5. If wiring and connections pass, test the X-position sensor 1 and gear lever assembly; consider the transmission control module only after those checks.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure a loose or corroded sensor connector.
  • Repair an open, shorted, or damaged X-position sensor wire.
  • Replace a failed gear lever X-position sensor 1.
  • Repair or replace the gear lever assembly if the sensor is not serviceable separately.
  • Repair or replace the transmission control module if its fault is confirmed.

Can I keep driving?

If the lever selects gears reliably, drive only as needed and avoid situations where you may need to shift quickly. If gear selection is incorrect or unavailable, stop safely and arrange recovery because the vehicle may not engage the gear you intend.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
