OBD-II fault code

P08A3: Gear Lever Y Position Sensor 2 Circuit Intermittent/Erratic

What it means

The gear lever Y-axis position sensor 2 reports a circuit intermittent/erratic fault. Redundant selector position channel is unreliable.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The gear lever Y-axis position sensor 2 provides a second signal for selector movement along the Y axis. The transmission control module sets P08A3 when that signal is intermittent or erratic instead of changing consistently with lever movement, often because a connection breaks contact intermittently.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Position sensor failed
  2. Wiring fault
  3. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and watch Y-axis sensor 2 alongside sensor 1 while slowly moving the selector through its positions.
  2. Look for dropouts or sudden jumps in sensor 2 readings and note whether they occur at a particular lever position.
  3. Inspect the Y-axis sensor 2 connector and harness for loose pins, chafing, damaged insulation, or a connection that shifts with vibration.
  4. Check sensor 2 power, ground, and signal circuits for intermittent opens or shorts while monitoring the reading, following vehicle wiring information.
  5. If the wiring stays stable, test sensor 2 output across lever movement against the manufacturer’s specification and replace it if the signal remains erratic.

Common fixes

  • Reseat or repair a loose Y-axis sensor 2 connector or terminal.
  • Repair chafed or broken wiring in the sensor 2 circuit.
  • Replace the Y-axis position sensor 2 if its signal remains erratic with stable wiring and connections.
  • Perform any required selector calibration or relearn.

Can I keep driving?

Minimize driving if shifting or the selector indication comes and goes, since the fault can trigger limp mode unpredictably. Stop if the transmission slips, shudders severely, or stops responding predictably to gear selection.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
