What it means
Gear lever Y position sensor 1 signal jumps or drops out. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Y-position sensor 1 reports the electronic gear lever's forward-and-back movement. P0824 sets when that signal intermittently jumps or drops out, leaving the transmission control module with an unstable Y-axis reading.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Worn rotary contact
- Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
- Harness routed against vibrating component
Symptoms
- Gear selection may be intermittent or incorrect
- Transmission warning light may be on
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and graph Y-position live data while moving the lever forward and back, noting any sudden jumps or dropouts.
- Inspect the Y-position sensor 1 connector seal and pins for water ingress, corrosion, looseness, or a pushed-back pin.
- Check the Y-signal harness for chafing or routing against a vibrating part that could interrupt the signal.
- Monitor the scan-tool reading while gently wiggling the harness and connector to reproduce an intermittent fault.
- If movement does not reveal the cause, test Y-position sensor 1 and circuit continuity during lever travel, then assess the gear lever assembly.
Common fixes
- Dry, clean, and secure a connector with moisture or poor pin contact, and renew a damaged seal as needed.
- Repair a pushed-back, corroded, or loose connector terminal.
- Reroute and secure harness sections that chafe or vibrate against nearby components.
- Replace a worn Y-position sensor 1 or repair the gear lever assembly if its internal contact is faulty.
Can I keep driving?
Because the Y-position signal can fail without warning, keep driving to a minimum and avoid relying on prompt gear changes. If gear selection becomes erratic or unavailable, stop safely and arrange recovery.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
