OBD-II fault code

P089B: Gear Lever X Position Sensor 2 Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The gear lever X-axis position sensor 2 reports a circuit range/performance fault. Redundant selector position channel is unreliable.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The gear lever X-axis position sensor 2 provides a second signal for the selector’s movement along the X axis. The transmission control module checks whether this signal changes smoothly and stays within its expected range as the lever moves; it sets P089B when the signal is plausible electrically but does not track the expected position pattern.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Position sensor failed
  2. Wiring fault
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Use a scan tool to record freeze-frame data and compare live selector X-axis sensor 2 readings with sensor 1 while moving the lever through its positions.
  2. Check whether the displayed selector position matches the lever position and note where sensor 2 deviates or stops changing.
  3. Inspect the X-axis sensor 2 connector and wiring for looseness, damage, contamination, or chafing that could affect its range.
  4. Check sensor 2 power, ground, and signal wiring for opens, shorts, or poor connections, following the vehicle wiring information.
  5. If wiring checks pass, test the sensor’s output across lever movement against the manufacturer’s specification and replace or calibrate the sensor if it remains out of range.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged or poorly seated X-axis sensor 2 wiring or connector.
  • Clean and secure the sensor 2 connector if contamination or a loose connection is found.
  • Replace the X-axis position sensor 2 if its output fails the specified movement test.
  • Calibrate or relearn selector position if required after repair.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid unnecessary driving if shifts are delayed, harsh, slipping, or the transmission enters limp mode; loss of reliable selector information can leave the vehicle in an unsuitable gear. If the gear indication is unreliable or the vehicle cannot shift predictably, stop in a safe place and arrange diagnosis.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
