What it means
Gear lever X position sensor 1 signal jumps or drops out — typically a worn rotary contact or vibration on the centre console.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
X-position sensor 1 tracks the electronic gear lever's left-to-right movement. P0823 sets when its signal is intermittent or erratic, such as when a worn contact or vibration briefly disrupts the X-position reading.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Worn rotary contact
- Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
- Harness routed against vibrating component
Symptoms
- Gear selection may be intermittent or incorrect
- Transmission warning light may be on
How to diagnose it
- Check freeze-frame data and graph the X-position live signal while slowly moving the lever, watching for jumps or dropouts rather than a steady change.
- Inspect the X-position sensor 1 connector for loose pins, corrosion, or poor retention, and check whether it moves with vibration.
- Examine the sensor and gear lever assembly for wear at the X-axis contact or a loose mounting that could make the reading unstable.
- With the signal monitored, gently move the accessible harness and connector to see whether vibration or harness movement reproduces the dropout.
- If the fault persists, test X-position sensor 1 and its circuit continuity during movement, then consider the gear lever assembly or control module only if the circuit is sound.
Common fixes
- Reseat and secure an intermittent sensor connector.
- Repair a loose, damaged, or chafing harness section affecting the X signal.
- Replace a worn X-position sensor 1 contact or sensor.
- Repair or replace the gear lever assembly if its mounting or internal parts are worn.
Can I keep driving?
Intermittent gear-position readings can make selection unpredictable, so avoid unnecessary driving and shifts under load. If the lever fails to select or hold the intended gear, stop safely and arrange recovery.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
