What it means
The gear lever X-axis position sensor 2 reports a circuit low fault. Redundant selector position channel is unreliable.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The gear lever X-axis position sensor 2 supplies a redundant signal for selector movement along the X axis. The transmission control module monitors that signal and sets P089C when its circuit voltage or signal falls below the expected low threshold, so it cannot reliably confirm the lever’s X-axis position.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Position sensor failed
- Wiring fault
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and compare live X-axis sensor 2 data with sensor 1 while moving the selector through its positions.
- Confirm whether the scan-tool reading for sensor 2 stays low or fails to follow the lever, and check for related supply or ground faults.
- Inspect sensor 2 wiring and connector for a short to ground, damaged insulation, corrosion, or loose pins.
- Test sensor 2 power, ground, and signal circuit continuity and shorts using the vehicle wiring information; check connector contact condition closely because corrosion can disrupt the signal.
- If the circuit is intact, test sensor 2 output through selector movement against the manufacturer’s specification and replace the sensor if its output remains low.
Common fixes
- Repair a signal wire short to ground or damaged wiring at the X-axis sensor 2 circuit.
- Clean or repair corroded connector terminals and restore a secure connection.
- Replace the X-axis position sensor 2 if its output remains below specification with sound wiring.
- Perform any required selector calibration or relearn after the repair.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving if shifts are abnormal or the transmission enters limp mode, since the module may not be able to verify the selected position. Stop if the vehicle slips, shudders severely, or will not select a predictable gear, and have it checked before continuing.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
