What it means
The signals of the gear lever X-axis position sensors 1 and 2 do not correlate within the calibrated tolerance.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The gear lever has two X-axis position sensors that let the transmission control module cross-check the selector’s movement along the X axis. P08A4 is set when the two signals disagree beyond the permitted correlation, such as when one sensor has drifted or the channels have been connected to the wrong inputs after a repair.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- One sensor characteristic drifted
- Harness incorrectly swapped
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and compare live X-axis sensor 1 and sensor 2 values while moving the selector through its positions.
- Check whether both X-axis signals change in the expected relationship and whether the disagreement occurs across all positions or only part of the travel.
- Inspect both X-axis sensor connectors and harnesses for damage, loose terminals, or signs that the sensor 1 and sensor 2 circuits were crossed during prior work.
- Verify each sensor’s power, ground, and signal wiring reaches the correct module inputs using vehicle wiring information.
- If wiring is correct, test both sensor outputs through selector movement against the manufacturer’s specification and replace the sensor whose response has drifted; perform any required calibration.
Common fixes
- Correct crossed X-axis sensor 1 and sensor 2 wiring if the channels were swapped.
- Repair loose, damaged, or poorly connected wiring at either X-axis sensor.
- Replace the X-axis sensor whose signal has drifted outside the specified correlation.
- Calibrate or relearn selector position after wiring or sensor repairs if required.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid driving if gear selection is delayed, harsh, slipping, or the transmission enters limp mode, because the module cannot reconcile the two X-axis position signals. Stop if the vehicle will not select or hold a predictable gear.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
