OBD-II fault code

P0826: Up and Down Shift Switch Circuit

What it means

The upshift/downshift switch circuit has a fault. The code does not specify which switch state or circuit condition caused it.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The upshift and downshift switch circuit carries driver shift requests to the transmission control module. P0826 signals a fault in that circuit, but does not specify whether the upshift or downshift input failed or whether the signal was too high or low.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Switch internal short
  2. Wiring shorted between channels

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and monitor the upshift and downshift switch states on a scan tool while pressing each control separately.
  2. Inspect both switch controls and their connectors for sticking, damage, looseness, or corrosion.
  3. Check the wiring between the switches and transmission control module for chafing, opens, shorts, or wires bridged between channels.
  4. Test each switch channel and its wiring against the manufacturer's specification, confirming that upshift and downshift inputs change independently.
  5. If both channels and wiring test correctly, check the gear lever or switch assembly and then the transmission control module.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure switch connectors with poor contact.
  • Repair wiring shorted between the upshift and downshift channels.
  • Replace a faulty upshift/downshift switch.
  • Repair or replace the gear lever or switch assembly if the fault is internal.
  • Repair or replace the transmission control module if testing confirms it is faulty.

Can I keep driving?

If shifts are missing or the transmission stays in one gear, avoid overtaking, steep climbs, and heavy acceleration. Stop safely if the transmission slips or cannot select a usable gear, since continued slipping or harsh shifts may cause further damage.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
