What it means
The transmission control module monitors the signal from gear lever Y-position sensor 1. It sets this code when that signal falls below the expected range.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Gear lever Y-position sensor 1 reports one axis of the selector's position to the transmission control module. The module monitors this signal as the lever moves and sets P082E when the circuit reads below its expected range, which can make the selected gear position appear incorrect.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
- Harness chafing through insulation
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check live gear-selector data while moving the lever through its positions to see when the Y-position reading drops low.
- Inspect sensor 1's connector and Y-signal wiring for corrosion, loose or pushed-back pins, and insulation chafed through to ground.
- With the wiring diagram, check whether the Y-signal wire is shorted to ground, following the manufacturer's test procedure.
- Check connector contact condition and sensor supply and ground circuits against the manufacturer's specification.
- If the wiring and connections pass, test gear lever Y-position sensor 1 and its signal at the transmission control module connector as specified by the manufacturer.
Common fixes
- Repair chafed Y-signal wiring that is contacting ground.
- Clean or repair corroded or loose connector terminals and restore a sound connection.
- Repair a short to ground in the sensor 1 signal circuit.
- Replace gear lever Y-position sensor 1 if its signal fails the manufacturer's test.
Can I keep driving?
If shifts are normal, limit driving to a short trip for diagnosis and avoid towing, hard acceleration, or busy traffic. If shifting becomes harsh, delayed, or erratic, or the transmission enters limp mode, stop somewhere safe; continued driving can worsen drivability and leave you unable to select gears reliably.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
