What it means
The Y-position sensor 1 signal is outside the expected range or does not perform as expected.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Gear lever Y-position sensor 1 reports a second axis of the selector's position to the transmission control module. The module checks whether the Y signal stays within its calibrated range and responds consistently as the lever moves; P082D sets when that signal is out of range or does not track position as expected.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Aged Hall element
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
- Sensor mounting loose - signal damping
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and watch live Y-position sensor 1 data while moving the lever through each position to identify readings that lag, drift, or fall outside the expected pattern.
- Inspect sensor 1's mounting for looseness and check its connector and harness for damage that could disturb the Y-axis signal.
- Check the sensor supply, ground, and Y-signal connections against the manufacturer's specification.
- Compare the Y-signal response with lever movement using the manufacturer's test procedure, looking for a weak or inconsistent sensor output.
- If the circuit and mounting are sound, test gear lever Y-position sensor 1 and its calibration or alignment as specified by the manufacturer.
Common fixes
- Secure a loose sensor mounting and restore its specified alignment.
- Repair damaged wiring or connector contacts affecting the Y-position signal.
- Replace gear lever Y-position sensor 1 if its signal drifts or fails the manufacturer's performance test.
- Perform the manufacturer's required calibration or relearn after repair, if applicable.
Can I keep driving?
If shifts remain normal, drive gently only as needed to reach a repair location and avoid towing or demanding manoeuvres. If shifts become delayed, harsh, or unpredictable, stop safely; an unreliable Y-position reading can lead to incorrect gear selection or reduced transmission operation.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
