OBD-II fault code

P0820: Gear Lever X-Y Position Sensor Circuit

What it means

The TCM detects an out-of-range or implausible signal from the gear lever X-Y position sensor used on shift-by-wire transmissions.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

In a shift-by-wire transmission, the gear lever X-Y position sensor reports the lever's position along two axes so the controller can determine the driver's selection. The TCM monitors whether that signal is plausible and within its expected range; P0820 sets when the X-Y position reading is out of range or does not make sense.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Position sensor failed
  2. Shifter mechanism worn

Symptoms

  • Gear selection may be incorrect or unavailable
  • Transmission warning light may be on

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and scan transmission codes to identify the selected gear and conditions when the X-Y reading became implausible.
  2. Watch the X-Y position sensor and commanded gear data while moving the lever through each selection, noting any position that is missing or inconsistent.
  3. Inspect the shifter mechanism for wear, looseness, obstruction, or damage that could prevent the lever from reaching a repeatable position.
  4. Check the position sensor connector and harness for loose terminals, corrosion, or damaged wiring, then test the sensor circuit using the wiring diagram.
  5. If the mechanism and wiring pass, test the X-Y sensor and TCM input according to the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Clear debris or correct a mechanical obstruction in the shifter mechanism.
  • Repair worn or loose shifter components that prevent repeatable positioning.
  • Repair damaged wiring or connector terminals at the X-Y sensor.
  • Replace a position sensor that fails its circuit or plausibility test.
  • Repair or replace the TCM only if its input fault is confirmed.

Can I keep driving?

Gear selection may be incorrect or unavailable, so do not drive if the displayed gear does not match the lever or the vehicle does not respond as expected. Stop safely and arrange diagnosis if the transmission cannot reliably select Drive, Reverse, or Park.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
