What is the Hyundai Santa Fe?
The Hyundai Santa Fe is a family SUV and Hyundai’s first independently developed SUV. Introduced in 2000, it helped establish the company in the SUV market. The name comes from the city of Santa Fe in New Mexico.
The Santa Fe has evolved over successive generations, with later versions adding hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains alongside petrol and diesel options. It is offered across several markets, where official figures cover different years and model line-ups.
Generations
The Santa Fe has five generations: first generation (2001–2006), code SM; second generation (2007–2012), code CM; third generation (2013–2018), codes DM and NC; fourth generation (2019–2023), code TM; and fifth generation (2024–today), code MX5. Its design and powertrain choices changed over time, with hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions joining the range in later generations.
Engines and power
In EU registrations, engines range from 1.6 L to 2.4 L, and power from 110 kW (150 PS) to 204 kW (277 PS). The range includes petrol, diesel, hybrid and plug-in hybrid entries. A 2.2 L diesel producing 145 kW (197 PS) was among the most registered EU configurations.
UK figures span 1.6 L to 2.7 L engines and 118 kW (160 PS) to 253 kW (344 PS). US and Canadian engine listings extend from 1.6 L to 3.5 L. These ranges reflect the different model years and line-ups in each market.
Fuel consumption
For EU versions, the lowest stated conventional official consumption is 5.9 L/100 km on WLTP. The lowest stated plug-in hybrid figure is 1.6 L/100 km on WLTP, a weighted result that assumes some driving is electric. UK figures give a low of 5.7 L/100 km on NEDC for conventional versions. The US EPA low is 6.5 L/100 km, while Canada’s low is 6.9 L/100 km on its 5-cycle procedure.
These results are not directly comparable because the test procedures differ: Europe uses WLTP or NEDC, the US uses EPA testing, and Canada uses its 5-cycle procedure.
Questions and answers
How many Santa Fe generations are there?
The Santa Fe has five generations, from the first generation (2001–2006) through the fifth generation (2024–today).
Did the Santa Fe get hybrid versions?
Yes. Hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions appear in the market figures, alongside petrol and diesel models.
What is the lowest stated Santa Fe consumption in the EU?
The lowest conventional figure is 5.9 L/100 km on WLTP. The plug-in hybrid weighted figure is 1.6 L/100 km on WLTP and assumes some driving is electric.
Why do official consumption figures differ between countries?
The procedures differ: European figures use WLTP or NEDC, the US uses EPA testing, and Canada uses its 5-cycle procedure.
New cars registered in the EU (plus Norway and Iceland), from the European Environment Agency. Figures on the NEDC procedure until 2020 and on WLTP from 2021; versions are grouped by engine and power, with their number of registrations.

Official figures are measured on standard test procedures and differ between markets. Your consumption depends on how, where and in what conditions you drive.
