OBD-II fault code

P2E05: Gear Lever Position Sensor B Range/Performance

What it means

The gear lever position sensor B reports a range/performance fault. Selector position cannot be measured reliably.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Gear lever position sensor B reports the selector's position to the transmission control system as a distinct input from sensor A. P2E05 sets when sensor B's signal does not follow the expected position range or pattern as the lever moves. A worn sensor element or calibration drift can cause this performance fault even when the circuit remains connected.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Position sensor failed
  2. Wiring or connector fault
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Check-engine or transmission warning light
  • Incorrect gear indication
  • Difficulty selecting or engaging a gear

How to diagnose it

  1. Use freeze-frame and live data to watch sensor B while moving the selector, looking for readings that lag, jump, or fail to correspond with the selected position.
  2. Compare sensor B's reading with the displayed gear and, where available, sensor A's reading to identify where the inputs disagree.
  3. Inspect sensor B's mounting, connector, and wiring for looseness, corrosion, wear, or movement that could make its signal inconsistent.
  4. Test sensor B's output across selector travel and compare the pattern with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the circuit is intact but the position signal remains outside the expected pattern, follow the manufacturer's alignment or calibration procedure and assess the sensor for wear.

Common fixes

  • Secure sensor B's connector and repair any damaged wiring.
  • Correct sensor B mounting or alignment if it is outside the specified position.
  • Replace sensor B if its signal remains inconsistent through selector travel.
  • Perform the manufacturer's calibration procedure if the sensor supports adjustment or relearning.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving if sensor B's reading conflicts with the lever or gear indication, since the transmission may restrict operation or fail to recognize the intended position. Do not drive if you cannot confirm which gear is engaged.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
