What it means
The gear lever position sensor A reports a range/performance fault. Selector position cannot be measured reliably.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Gear lever position sensor A tracks the selector position and sends that information to the transmission control system. P2E01 is set when sensor A's signal is present but does not match the expected position pattern or changes in a way the module considers implausible. A worn sensor element or misadjustment can cause this range/performance fault even when the circuit is not open.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Position sensor failed
- Wiring or connector fault
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- Check-engine or transmission warning light
- Incorrect gear indication
- Difficulty selecting or engaging a gear
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame and live transmission data for sensor A's reported position while moving the selector, looking for values that lag, jump, or disagree with the selected gear.
- Check whether the displayed gear matches each lever position and note where the mismatch occurs.
- Inspect sensor A's mounting, connector, and wiring for movement, looseness, corrosion, wear, or damage that could distort its position signal.
- Test sensor A's signal across the full selector travel and compare its pattern with the manufacturer's specification.
- If the circuit is sound but the signal remains out of range or inconsistent, follow the manufacturer's alignment or calibration procedure before concluding the sensor has aged or failed.
Common fixes
- Secure a loose sensor A connector or repair damaged wiring.
- Correct sensor A mounting or alignment if it is outside the specified position.
- Replace sensor A if its output remains implausible across selector travel.
- Perform the manufacturer's calibration procedure if sensor A is serviceable and requires relearning.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving if the gear display disagrees with the lever or engagement is unreliable; the transmission may enter a reduced-operation mode or fail to select the intended gear. Arrange diagnosis promptly, and do not drive if the vehicle's actual gear cannot be confirmed.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
