OBD-II fault code

P2E03: Gear Lever Position Sensor A Circuit High

What it means

The gear lever position sensor A reports a circuit high fault. Selector position cannot be measured reliably.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Gear lever position sensor A reports selector position to the transmission control system. P2E03 sets when the sensor A circuit voltage is above the module's expected range, often because of a short to voltage, an open or poor ground, or a failed sensor. This high-circuit condition is different from sensor A circuit low and from a signal that is simply inconsistent with lever position.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Position sensor failed
  2. Wiring or connector fault
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check-engine or transmission warning light
  • Incorrect gear indication
  • Difficulty selecting or engaging a gear

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame and live data for sensor A's signal and selected gear, confirming whether the circuit is reported high when the fault occurs.
  2. Inspect sensor A's connector and wiring for corrosion, spread pins, damaged insulation, or contact with a power feed that could raise the signal.
  3. Check the sensor A ground and signal wires for an open circuit or short to voltage using the vehicle wiring diagram.
  4. Measure the circuit at the sensor and module connectors and compare the readings with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the wiring and ground are sound, test sensor A through selector movement and replace it only if its output remains above specification.

Common fixes

  • Repair sensor A wiring shorted to a power feed or damaged insulation.
  • Restore a sound ground and correct loose or corroded connector terminals.
  • Secure or replace a damaged sensor A connector.
  • Replace gear lever position sensor A if the circuit tests correctly but its output remains high.

Can I keep driving?

Do not rely on the gear display if it disagrees with the lever, and avoid driving when gear engagement is uncertain; the transmission may restrict operation or recognize the wrong position. Arrange prompt diagnosis, especially if the vehicle will not reliably select Park or another intended gear.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
