OBD-II fault code

P2E00: Gear Lever Position Sensor A Circuit

What it means

The gear lever position sensor A reports a circuit fault. Selector position cannot be measured reliably.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Gear lever position sensor A reports the selector's position to the transmission control system. The module monitors sensor A's electrical circuit and sets P2E00 when the circuit has a fault that prevents reliable position information. The code identifies sensor A's circuit, but does not by itself say whether the signal is low, high, or merely outside the expected range.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Position sensor failed
  2. Wiring or connector fault

Symptoms

  • Check-engine or transmission warning light
  • Incorrect gear indication
  • Difficulty selecting or engaging a gear

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and transmission live data for sensor A's reported position, related selector codes, and whether the signal changes as the lever moves.
  2. Compare the displayed gear with the actual lever position through each selector position, noting any dropouts or contradictory readings.
  3. Inspect sensor A's connector and nearby wiring for looseness, corrosion, fluid contamination, chafing, or damage.
  4. Check sensor A's power, ground, and signal circuit for continuity and shorts using the vehicle wiring diagram and manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the wiring checks pass, test sensor A's output through the selector's travel and replace or adjust it only if it fails the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Secure a loose sensor A connector or repair damaged wiring.
  • Clean corrosion from the connector and restore a sound terminal connection.
  • Replace a failed gear lever position sensor A.
  • Adjust or calibrate sensor A if the manufacturer's procedure identifies misalignment.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid driving if the indicated gear is wrong, the vehicle will not reliably engage a gear, or it may select or report an unexpected position; the transmission may limit operation or the vehicle may not move as intended. If the selector indication is unreliable, arrange repair before driving.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
