What it means
The control module detects a low signal from camshaft profile actuator position sensor B on bank 1. The signal does not reliably indicate the actuator’s position.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The B camshaft profile actuator changes the cam profile, and sensor B on bank 1 reports its position to the control module. This code sets when the sensor B circuit voltage is below the expected level, preventing a reliable position reading.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Internal sensor short
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
- Possible rough idle or stalling
- Increased fuel consumption
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and check live sensor B position data to determine whether the low signal is steady or occurs only under certain conditions.
- Inspect the bank 1 sensor B connector and wiring for corrosion, pin damage, chafing, or a wire touching ground.
- Check the sensor B signal circuit for a short to ground using the manufacturer’s circuit isolation procedure.
- Measure sensor B’s supply and ground, then check signal-wire continuity and connector contact condition against service information.
- If those checks pass, test sensor B and verify that the bank 1 actuator moves through its expected range.
Common fixes
- Clean corrosion from the sensor B connector and restore sound terminal contact.
- Repair a signal wire shorted to ground or other damaged wiring in the bank 1 sensor B circuit.
- Replace sensor B if an internal fault is pulling its signal low.
- Repair the bank 1 actuator if it also fails movement checks.
Can I keep driving?
Keep driving to a minimum and avoid hard acceleration because a low bank 1 sensor B signal can disrupt cam-profile control and cause power loss or stalling. Stop driving if the engine repeatedly stalls or runs roughly.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
