OBD-II fault code

P2C1C: B Camshaft Profile Actuator Position Sensor C Circuit Low Bank 1

What it means

The control module detects a low signal from camshaft profile actuator position sensor C on bank 1. The signal does not reliably indicate the actuator’s position.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

On some engines, sensor C reports the position of the B camshaft profile actuator on bank 1, allowing the control module to check whether the selected cam profile is reached. This code sets when the sensor signal is lower than the module's expected range, so it cannot reliably confirm the actuator position.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to ground
  2. Internal sensor short
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
  • Possible rough idle or stalling
  • Increased fuel consumption

How to diagnose it

  1. Use a scan tool to save freeze-frame data and compare the commanded and reported position for the bank 1 B camshaft profile actuator.
  2. With the engine off, inspect sensor C and its connector on bank 1 for corrosion, loose pins, damaged insulation, or a signal wire touching ground.
  3. Check live sensor data while changing engine speed or actuator command, if supported, to see whether the reported position stays abnormally low.
  4. Test the sensor supply, ground, and signal circuit against the wiring diagram and manufacturer's specification, looking for a grounded signal or excessive resistance at the connector.
  5. If the wiring checks pass, test sensor C and the actuator position response according to the manufacturer's procedure before replacing either part.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure corroded or loose sensor C connector pins.
  • Repair a signal wire shorted to ground or damaged harness section.
  • Replace sensor C if it fails the manufacturer's electrical or response test.
  • Repair the B camshaft profile actuator if it does not move as commanded after the sensor circuit is verified.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid hard acceleration and high engine loads because the engine may lose power in the mid-range or stall. If it runs roughly or stalls, stop driving; continued operation can worsen drivability and fuel consumption.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
