What it means
The control module detects a high signal from camshaft profile actuator position sensor B on bank 1. The signal does not reliably indicate the actuator’s position.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The B camshaft profile actuator changes the cam profile, and sensor B on bank 1 reports its position to the control module. This code sets when the sensor B circuit voltage is above the expected level, making its position signal unreliable.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire shorted to B+
- Open position sensor
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
- Possible rough idle or stalling
- Increased fuel consumption
How to diagnose it
- Capture freeze-frame data and watch live bank 1 sensor B data to see whether the high signal is constant or intermittent.
- Inspect sensor B’s connector and wiring for corroded or loose pins, broken conductors, and damage that could leave the circuit open.
- Check the signal wire for a short to battery voltage or another high-voltage circuit using the manufacturer’s isolation procedure.
- Test sensor B’s supply, ground, signal continuity, and connector contacts against vehicle service information.
- If the circuit checks out, test sensor B for an internal open and verify the bank 1 actuator moves correctly.
Common fixes
- Secure the sensor B connector and clean or repair corroded or loose terminals.
- Repair a signal wire shorted to battery voltage or an open in the bank 1 sensor B circuit.
- Replace sensor B if it is internally open or remains high with a sound circuit.
- Repair the bank 1 actuator if testing separately finds it is sticking or worn.
Can I keep driving?
Drive only as needed and avoid hard acceleration; the high bank 1 sensor B signal can lead to reduced power, rough running, or stalling. Stop safely if the engine begins to stall or loses substantial power.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
