What it means
The control module detects a circuit fault in camshaft profile actuator position sensor C on bank 1. The signal does not reliably indicate the actuator’s position.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The B camshaft profile actuator changes the cam profile, while position sensor C reports the actuator’s position to the control module. This code sets when the module detects an electrical circuit fault in sensor C on bank 1 and cannot trust its position signal.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Position sensor failed
- Wiring or connector fault
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
- Possible rough idle or stalling
- Increased fuel consumption
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and review live bank 1 sensor C position data to establish when its signal becomes unreliable.
- Use vehicle service information to identify sensor C on bank 1, then inspect its connector and wiring for looseness, corrosion, chafing, or heat damage.
- Check whether sensor C’s reported position responds plausibly as the actuator is commanded, comparing with service information or a matching sensor if available.
- With the circuit isolated as specified by the manufacturer, test sensor C’s supply, ground, signal wiring, and connector continuity for opens or shorts.
- If the circuit checks out, test sensor C and the bank 1 actuator according to the manufacturer’s procedure.
Common fixes
- Reconnect the bank 1 sensor C connector and clean or repair corroded terminals.
- Repair damaged or chafed wiring in the sensor C circuit.
- Replace bank 1 camshaft profile actuator position sensor C if it fails testing.
- Repair the bank 1 actuator if it prevents sensor C from reporting a valid position.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving and avoid hard acceleration, since an unreliable bank 1 sensor C signal can reduce power and may cause rough running or stalling. If the engine stalls, runs very roughly, or enters limp mode, stop somewhere safe and arrange diagnosis.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
