What it means
The control module detects a high signal from camshaft profile actuator position sensor A on bank 1. The signal does not reliably indicate the actuator’s position.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The camshaft profile actuator changes the engine’s valve profile, while position sensor A reports the actuator’s position to the control module. The module sets P2C08 when sensor A’s Bank 1 signal is higher than its expected electrical range, so it cannot reliably confirm the actuator position.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire shorted to B+
- Open position sensor
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
- Possible rough idle or stalling
- Increased fuel consumption
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare live sensor A position on Bank 1 with the commanded actuator position to see when the high signal occurs.
- With the engine off, inspect sensor A’s Bank 1 connector and wiring for corrosion, damage, loose pins, or contact with a power feed.
- Check the sensor circuit’s supply, ground, and signal connections using the vehicle wiring information, looking for a signal wire shorted to B+.
- Measure the signal while moving the harness and compare it with the manufacturer’s specification to find an intermittent high reading.
- If wiring and connections are sound, test sensor A on Bank 1 against the manufacturer’s specification for an open or failed sensor.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure corroded or loose sensor A connector pins on Bank 1.
- Repair a signal wire shorted to B+ or damaged wiring in the sensor A circuit.
- Replace a failed or open camshaft profile actuator position sensor A on Bank 1.
- Clear the code and confirm sensor A tracks actuator movement during a road test.
Can I keep driving?
Drive gently only if the engine runs smoothly and responds normally; avoid hard acceleration because Bank 1 valve-profile control may be impaired. If it stalls, loses substantial power, or enters limp mode, stop driving and arrange repair.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
