OBD-II fault code

P2C05: A Camshaft Profile Actuator Position Sensor A Circuit Bank 1

What it means

The position sensor A of camshaft profile actuator A on bank 1 reports a circuit bank 1 condition. Cam profile selection feedback cannot be measured reliably.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Camshaft profile actuator A on bank 1 selects a cam profile, and position sensor A reports the actuator’s position to the control module. P2C05 identifies a circuit fault in that bank 1 feedback circuit, so the module cannot reliably measure the selected profile position.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Position sensor failed
  2. Wiring or connector fault

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Power loss especially in mid-rpm range
  • Possible rough idle or stalling
  • Increased fuel consumption

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and live cam-profile position data for actuator A on bank 1, noting when feedback becomes unavailable.
  2. Locate bank 1 and inspect sensor A’s connector and wiring at camshaft profile actuator A for damage, loose pins, or oil and moisture intrusion.
  3. Check the sensor’s power, ground, and signal circuits against the vehicle wiring diagram for opens, shorts, or poor connections.
  4. If the wiring checks out, monitor sensor A’s output while the actuator changes profile and compare it with the manufacturer’s specification.
  5. If feedback is electrically sound but the reported position does not follow the command, inspect the bank 1 actuator mechanism for binding or wear.

Common fixes

  • Repair loose, damaged, or contaminated wiring and connector connections at bank 1 sensor A.
  • Restore a faulty power, ground, or signal connection in the sensor A circuit.
  • Replace camshaft profile position sensor A on bank 1 if it fails the specified circuit test.
  • Repair or replace actuator A on bank 1 if it binds or fails to move as commanded.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine runs smoothly and power is normal, limit driving and avoid hard acceleration; reduced mid-range power or stalling can make traffic manoeuvres unsafe. Stop if it stalls repeatedly or loses substantial power, since the engine may not select the intended cam profile.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
