OBD-II fault code

P282A: Pressure Control Solenoid K Stuck On

What it means

Pressure control solenoid K stays in the activated state when commanded off. Affected hydraulic circuit stays pressurised.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Pressure control solenoid K is an electronically operated valve that controls fluid pressure in its transmission circuit. The TCM detects that the circuit remains pressurised after it commands solenoid K off. A spool stuck open or a control driver that continues to energise the solenoid can cause this code.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Solenoid spool stuck in open position
  2. TCM output driver stuck on
  3. Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement

Symptoms

  • Check-engine or transmission warning light
  • Harsh or delayed shifts
  • Transmission may slip or hesitate
  • Transmission may enter limp mode

How to diagnose it

  1. Read transmission codes and freeze-frame data, then check live data to confirm whether solenoid K is commanded off when the circuit remains pressurised.
  2. Inspect the solenoid K connector and harness for damage, contamination, or a short that could keep the valve energised.
  3. Check the transmission fluid level and condition according to the manufacturer’s procedure, and note any evidence of contamination.
  4. Follow the manufacturer’s procedure to test whether the TCM output to solenoid K switches off when commanded.
  5. If the electrical command switches off correctly, check solenoid K and its valve-body passage for a spool stuck open or debris preventing it from closing.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged wiring or a connector fault that keeps solenoid K energised.
  • Correct the transmission fluid level or condition if outside the manufacturer’s specification.
  • Clean or repair a valve-body passage that is preventing solenoid K from closing.
  • Replace solenoid K if its spool sticks open or it fails the prescribed test.
  • Repair the TCM output driver if testing confirms it continues to energise the circuit when commanded off.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving and avoid hard acceleration or towing because the affected circuit can stay pressurised and cause harsh shifts or limp mode. Stop if the transmission slips, behaves unpredictably, or loses drive.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
