What it means
The transmission control module monitors whether pressure control solenoid N follows its commanded state. It sets this code when the solenoid remains on after being commanded off.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Pressure control solenoid N regulates transmission hydraulic pressure under TCM control. This code sets when the TCM commands solenoid N off but detects that it remains on, which can result from a spool stuck open, debris or a TCM output that continues driving the solenoid.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Solenoid spool stuck in open position
- TCM output driver stuck on
- Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
Symptoms
- Transmission warning light may illuminate
- Harsh or delayed shifting
- Slipping or unexpected shifts
- Transmission may enter limp mode
How to diagnose it
- Capture freeze-frame data and scan for related solenoid, pressure and gear-ratio codes to see when the off-command mismatch occurred.
- Check transmission fluid level and condition, noting contamination that could keep solenoid N’s spool from moving freely.
- Inspect the solenoid N connector and transmission harness for shorts, damage, corrosion or fluid intrusion that could maintain the electrical command.
- Compare the commanded state of solenoid N with available current, pressure and shift data using a scan tool under the conditions that trigger the fault.
- If the circuit command turns off but pressure behavior indicates the solenoid stays on, inspect the spool and valve body for sticking; test the TCM output driver per the manufacturer’s procedure if the command remains on.
Common fixes
- Repair a shorted or damaged solenoid N control wire or connector.
- Clean or replace solenoid N if debris or a stuck open spool is confirmed.
- Service the valve body if contamination is preventing solenoid movement.
- Repair or replace the TCM only if its output driver is confirmed to stay on with the external circuit verified.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving and avoid towing or demanding acceleration if the transmission shifts harshly, slips or behaves unpredictably; persistent excess pressure can damage transmission components. Stop if it loses drive or enters a mode that makes vehicle control uncertain.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
