OBD-II fault code

P2809: Pressure Control Solenoid G Stuck On

What it means

Pressure control solenoid G stays in the activated state when commanded off. Affected hydraulic circuit stays pressurised.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Pressure control solenoid G controls pressure in a transmission hydraulic circuit, switching according to commands from the transmission control module. This code sets when the module commands solenoid G off but the circuit remains activated and pressurised, which can result from a stuck-open spool or an output driver that remains on.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Solenoid spool stuck in open position
  2. TCM output driver stuck on
  3. Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement

Symptoms

  • Check-engine or transmission warning light
  • Harsh or delayed shifts
  • Transmission may slip or hesitate
  • Transmission may enter limp mode

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data for the gear, temperature, and solenoid G command when the fault occurred.
  2. Use live data to see whether the module commands solenoid G off while pressure or shift behavior indicates that its circuit remains active.
  3. Inspect solenoid G’s connector and harness for shorts, damaged insulation, or corrosion that might keep the circuit energized.
  4. With the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure, check whether the control module output to solenoid G switches off as commanded.
  5. If the electrical output behaves correctly, inspect solenoid G and its valve-body passage for a spool held open by wear or debris.

Common fixes

  • Repair wiring shorts or poor connections that keep solenoid G energized.
  • Clean or replace solenoid G if its spool sticks in the open position.
  • Remove debris from the affected hydraulic passage and repair valve-body damage.
  • Repair the transmission control module output driver if testing confirms that it stays on when commanded off.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid driving farther than needed to reach a safe place if shifts are harsh or the transmission slips; an affected circuit that stays pressurised can cause unpredictable shifting and further damage. Arrange diagnosis promptly, especially if limp mode occurs.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
