OBD-II fault code

P2821: Pressure Control Solenoid J Stuck On

What it means

Pressure control solenoid J stays in the activated state when commanded off. Affected hydraulic circuit stays pressurised.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Pressure control solenoid J regulates pressure in its hydraulic circuit, switching in response to TCM commands. This code sets when the circuit remains activated after the TCM commands solenoid J off, which can result from a stuck-open spool or an electrical driver that continues applying the command.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Solenoid spool stuck in open position
  2. TCM output driver stuck on
  3. Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement

Symptoms

  • Check-engine or transmission warning light
  • Harsh or delayed shifts
  • Transmission may slip or hesitate
  • Transmission may enter limp mode

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and compare the TCM’s solenoid J command with available pressure data to confirm the circuit stays active when commanded off.
  2. Check transmission fluid level and condition, then inspect for contamination that could keep solenoid J’s spool from moving freely.
  3. Inspect solenoid J’s connector and wiring for shorts, damage, or poor contact that might keep the solenoid energized.
  4. Check solenoid J coil resistance and circuit behavior against the manufacturer’s specification, following the vehicle’s electrical test procedure.
  5. If the wiring and coil pass, test the TCM output and inspect the solenoid spool and valve body for sticking in the open position.

Common fixes

  • Repair wiring or connector faults that keep solenoid J energized.
  • Replace solenoid J if its spool sticks in the open position or its electrical tests fail.
  • Service contaminated transmission fluid as specified by the vehicle maker.
  • Repair the TCM output driver or valve body if testing identifies either as the cause.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving and avoid towing or hard acceleration; stop if the transmission slips, shifts unpredictably, or loses drive. A circuit that remains pressurized can cause harsh shifts and additional transmission wear.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
