What it means
Pressure control solenoid K is commanded on but does not produce the expected pressure. Spool stuck closed or hydraulic feed restricted.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Pressure control solenoid K is an electronically operated valve that helps regulate fluid pressure in its transmission hydraulic circuit. The TCM compares the pressure response with what it expects when it commands solenoid K on. This code sets when the response is too low, such as when the solenoid spool is stuck closed or its hydraulic feed is restricted.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Solenoid spool stuck in closed position
- Hydraulic feed restricted by debris
- Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
Symptoms
- Check-engine or transmission warning light
- Harsh or delayed shifts
- Transmission may slip or hesitate
- Transmission may enter limp mode
How to diagnose it
- Read transmission codes and freeze-frame data, then check live data for the command to solenoid K and the related pressure response when the fault occurs.
- Check the transmission fluid level and condition using the vehicle maker’s procedure, since low or contaminated fluid can affect the hydraulic feed.
- Inspect the solenoid K connector and harness for damage, loose connections, contamination, or signs of fluid intrusion.
- Use the manufacturer’s diagnostic procedure to check solenoid K operation and compare its electrical response with the commanded state.
- If the electrical checks pass, have the solenoid K hydraulic feed and valve-body passages checked for debris or a stuck-closed spool.
Common fixes
- Repair a loose or damaged solenoid K connector or harness.
- Correct the fluid level or condition if it is outside the manufacturer’s specification.
- Clean or repair a restricted hydraulic feed or valve-body passage.
- Replace a solenoid K that is stuck closed or fails its electrical or functional checks.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid towing, hard acceleration, and long trips because inadequate pressure can cause slipping, harsh shifts, or limp mode. Stop driving if the transmission slips badly or loses drive, since continued use can worsen internal damage.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
