What it means
Pressure control solenoid H stays in the activated state when commanded off. Affected hydraulic circuit stays pressurised.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Pressure control solenoid H controls pressure in a transmission hydraulic circuit and should release that pressure when the control module commands it off. P2818 sets when the H circuit remains activated, so pressure stays applied; a stuck-open spool, debris, or a control-module output fault may be responsible.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Solenoid spool stuck in open position
- TCM output driver stuck on
- Carbon or debris buildup preventing free movement
Symptoms
- Check-engine or transmission warning light
- Harsh or delayed shifts
- Transmission may slip or hesitate
- Transmission may enter limp mode
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and related transmission codes to determine when the module commanded H off and the fault was detected.
- Check fluid level and condition using the vehicle's specified procedure, and note contamination that could keep the H spool from moving freely.
- Inspect solenoid H wiring and connectors for damage or signs of a short that could keep the circuit energized.
- Use scan-tool data to compare the module's command to H with available pressure and shift response data.
- Test the H circuit and module output using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure to distinguish a stuck command from a mechanical solenoid fault.
- If the command and wiring are correct, inspect solenoid H's spool and valve-body passage for sticking or debris.
Common fixes
- Repair wiring or connector damage that keeps solenoid H energized.
- Clean or replace solenoid H if its spool is stuck open from debris or wear.
- Service the valve body if contamination or a sticking passage prevents H from releasing pressure.
- Repair the control-module output only if the specified tests confirm it is stuck on.
Can I keep driving?
Keep driving to a minimum because pressure that remains applied can cause harsh shifts and additional transmission wear. Avoid towing or hard acceleration, and stop if the transmission behaves unpredictably or loses drive.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
