What it means
The TCM detects an open circuit in the control wiring of pressure control solenoid P. No current flows when the solenoid is commanded.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The transmission control module sends current through the control circuit to operate Pressure Control Solenoid P. This code sets when the module detects an open circuit, so current cannot flow as commanded; a broken wire, open coil, or pushed-back connector pin can interrupt the path.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open in solenoid control wire
- Open solenoid coil
- Pin pushed back out of connector body
Symptoms
- Transmission warning light may illuminate
- Harsh or delayed shifting
- Transmission may enter limp mode
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check for companion transmission codes that could indicate a shared circuit supply or connector issue.
- Inspect the Solenoid P connector for a loose plug, pushed-back pin, corrosion, or damaged wiring near the transmission.
- Check the Solenoid P coil for continuity and compare its resistance with the manufacturer’s specification to rule out an open coil.
- With the circuit isolated as specified, test the control wire end to end for continuity between the module connector and Solenoid P.
- Check for an unintended open at intermediate connectors and confirm the module output only after the solenoid and harness pass their tests.
Common fixes
- Reseat the Solenoid P connector and secure any pin that has backed out.
- Repair the broken or open control wire.
- Replace Pressure Control Solenoid P if its coil is open.
- Repair the TCM circuit only if testing confirms the open is inside the module.
Can I keep driving?
Because this open circuit can trigger limp mode and unreliable shifts, avoid unnecessary driving and do not tow or carry heavy loads. If the vehicle cannot select gears reliably, stop and arrange recovery.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
