What it means
Pressure control solenoid J shows intermittent electrical or hydraulic faults. Loose connector or marginal coil.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The TCM uses pressure control solenoid J to regulate transmission pressure and monitors whether its electrical and hydraulic response stays consistent. This code sets when solenoid J’s response comes and goes, often because a loose connector, vibration-sensitive contact, or temperature-dependent coil fault interrupts operation.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Solenoid connector not fully seated
- Coil resistance drifts with temperature
- Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
Symptoms
- Check-engine or transmission warning light
- Intermittent harsh or delayed shifts
- Shifting symptoms may come and go
- Transmission may briefly enter limp mode
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and note the temperature, road conditions, and solenoid J command when the fault was recorded; check whether related codes appeared at the same time.
- Inspect solenoid J’s connector for a loose fit, backed-out terminals, corrosion, or fluid, then check the harness for chafing or movement-related damage.
- With scan data or the vehicle maker’s test procedure, monitor solenoid J’s electrical response while carefully moving the harness to look for interruptions.
- Measure solenoid J coil resistance when cold and, if the fault is temperature-related, after it warms; compare readings with the manufacturer’s specification.
- If the electrical checks remain stable, compare commanded and observed pressure response to investigate an intermittent hydraulic or valve-body problem.
Common fixes
- Seat and secure the solenoid J connector; clean or repair its terminals as needed.
- Repair chafed or loose wiring that loses contact with vibration.
- Replace solenoid J if its coil resistance changes outside the manufacturer’s specification as it warms.
- Repair the valve body if pressure response intermittently fails despite stable electrical operation.
Can I keep driving?
Keep trips short and avoid towing or heavy acceleration until the fault is resolved, since the transmission may suddenly shift poorly or enter limp mode. Stop driving if slipping becomes persistent or drive is lost.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
