OBD-II fault code

P27D5: Pressure Control Solenoid S Control Circuit/Open

What it means

The control circuit for pressure control solenoid S is reporting an open condition.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Pressure control solenoid S is an electrically operated valve that helps regulate transmission hydraulic pressure. The transmission control module monitors its control circuit and sets P27D5 when it detects an open path, such as a broken wire, disconnected contact, or open coil.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open in solenoid control wire
  2. Open solenoid coil
  3. Pin pushed back out of connector body

Symptoms

  • Transmission warning light may illuminate
  • Harsh or delayed shifting
  • Transmission may enter limp mode

How to diagnose it

  1. Use a scan tool to record freeze-frame data and transmission codes before clearing anything, so you can see when the solenoid S fault occurred.
  2. Inspect the solenoid S connector and harness for loose plugs, damaged insulation, corrosion, or a terminal pushed back into the connector body.
  3. With the ignition off and the circuit isolated as specified by the manufacturer, check continuity through the solenoid S control wire and look for an open.
  4. Measure the pressure control solenoid S coil and compare its resistance with the manufacturer's specification to check for an open coil.
  5. If the wire and coil test correctly, check connector contact and the TCM control circuit using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Seat the solenoid S connector fully and repair a pushed-back or damaged terminal.
  • Repair an open or damaged solenoid S control wire.
  • Replace pressure control solenoid S if its coil is open.
  • Repair the TCM control circuit if testing identifies an open there.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid towing, hard acceleration, and long trips because the transmission may shift harshly or enter limp mode. Stop driving if it slips, loses drive, or becomes difficult to control, since continued operation can worsen transmission damage.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
