What it means
The transmission control module monitors the control circuit for pressure control solenoid A. It sets this code when it detects an open circuit in the solenoid’s driver circuit.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
Pressure control solenoid A is an electrically operated valve that the transmission control module uses to regulate hydraulic pressure. The module monitors solenoid A's driver circuit for electrical continuity. P0960 sets when that circuit is open, so the module cannot reliably command the solenoid and transmission pressure may be incorrect.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Solenoid coil open
- Wiring break
- Pin pushed back out of connector body
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check for related transmission codes before clearing anything, since they may point to a shared power or connector problem.
- Inspect the transmission wiring and solenoid A connector for damage, fluid intrusion, loose terminals, or a pushed-back pin.
- Use the manufacturer's wiring diagram to identify the solenoid A circuit and check its connector seating and harness routing.
- With the circuit isolated as specified by the manufacturer, test solenoid A coil continuity and compare it with the manufacturer's specification.
- If the coil passes, test the driver circuit for an open between the transmission connector and control module.
Common fixes
- Reseat the connector and restore any pushed-back solenoid A terminal.
- Repair a break or damaged connection in the solenoid A control wiring.
- Replace pressure control solenoid A if its coil is open.
- Clear the code and verify normal pressure control and shifting under the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid towing, hard acceleration, and long trips while the transmission may not be controlling hydraulic pressure correctly. If it slips, bangs into gear, or loses drive, stop to limit clutch and transmission damage.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
