What it means
Pressure control solenoid M shows intermittent electrical or hydraulic faults. Loose connector or marginal coil.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Pressure control solenoid M regulates a transmission hydraulic circuit under TCM command. This intermittent fault sets when solenoid M's electrical or hydraulic response comes and goes, often with a loose connection, vibration, or a coil whose behavior changes as it heats up.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Solenoid connector not fully seated
- Coil resistance drifts with temperature
- Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and check whether the fault coincides with temperature, vibration, or a particular solenoid M command.
- Inspect and reseat solenoid M's connector, checking for weak pin fit, corrosion, fluid intrusion, or harness strain.
- With the fault monitored on a scan tool, carefully move the accessible solenoid M harness and connector to see whether the command or fault status changes.
- Check solenoid M coil resistance and circuit continuity when cold and, if the fault is temperature-related, repeat using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure when warm.
- If electrical checks remain stable, compare commanded operation with available pressure data and inspect for an intermittent sticking spool or restricted feed.
Common fixes
- Reseat the solenoid M connector and secure the harness to prevent movement.
- Clean or repair corroded connector pins and replace damaged terminals or wiring.
- Replace solenoid M if its coil resistance or operation becomes intermittent under the specified test conditions.
- Service a sticking valve or restricted passage if hydraulic checks identify a cause.
Can I keep driving?
Intermittent faults can become a sudden harsh shift or limp mode, so avoid long trips, towing, and hard acceleration until diagnosed. If the transmission slips or loses drive, stop in a safe place and arrange assistance.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
