What it means
The transmission control module monitors the electrical operation of pressure control solenoid N for consistency. It sets this code when the circuit or solenoid operation is intermittently outside the expected range.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The TCM monitors the electrical operation of pressure control solenoid N, which regulates transmission hydraulic pressure. This code sets when the solenoid or its circuit behaves inconsistently, such as a loose connector, a temperature-dependent coil fault or a vibration-sensitive connection.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Solenoid connector not fully seated
- Coil resistance drifts with temperature
- Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
Symptoms
- Transmission warning light may illuminate
- Intermittent harsh or delayed shifting
- Transmission may intermittently enter limp mode
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check whether the fault appears at a particular temperature, gear, vibration condition or alongside other transmission codes.
- Inspect solenoid N’s connector and nearby harness for an incompletely seated plug, loose terminals, corrosion, fluid intrusion or chafed wiring.
- Review live solenoid N command and electrical data, if available, while reproducing the conditions in the freeze frame and watching for dropouts.
- Check coil resistance and circuit continuity when cold and after the fault conditions are reproduced, comparing measurements with the manufacturer’s specification.
- If the wiring and coil tests are stable, check the TCM connector, power, ground and output for intermittent interruption using the specified procedure.
Common fixes
- Fully seat and secure the pressure control solenoid N connector.
- Clean corroded terminals or repair loose terminal tension and damaged wiring.
- Replace solenoid N if its coil resistance drifts outside specification with temperature.
- Repair an intermittent TCM connection or replace the module only if the external circuit is confirmed sound.
Can I keep driving?
Because the shifting fault can return without warning, avoid long trips, towing and traffic situations where sudden loss of normal shifting would be hazardous. Stop if the transmission begins slipping severely or enters limp mode.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
