OBD-II fault code

P281A: Pressure Control Solenoid H Intermittent

What it means

Pressure control solenoid H shows intermittent electrical or hydraulic faults. Loose connector or marginal coil.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Pressure control solenoid H adjusts hydraulic pressure in a transmission circuit in response to the control module. P281A sets when H's electrical or hydraulic operation fails intermittently, often because a loose connector, vibration-sensitive contact, or temperature-sensitive coil briefly disrupts its response.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Solenoid connector not fully seated
  2. Coil resistance drifts with temperature
  3. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration

Symptoms

  • Check-engine or transmission warning light
  • Intermittent harsh or delayed shifts
  • Shifting symptoms may come and go
  • Transmission may briefly enter limp mode

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and code status before clearing anything, noting temperature, vehicle speed, and whether the H fault is pending or intermittent.
  2. Inspect solenoid H's connector for an incomplete latch, corrosion, loose terminals, or a pin that can move in the connector body.
  3. Check the H harness for chafing or strain, and inspect likely contact points for damage that could appear with vibration.
  4. With the manufacturer's procedure, monitor H circuit data or test continuity while gently moving the harness to identify an intermittent connection.
  5. Measure solenoid H coil resistance under the specified conditions, including temperature-related checks if the manufacturer provides them.
  6. If the circuit remains stable but symptoms recur, compare commanded H operation with pressure or shift data to investigate intermittent sticking in the valve body.

Common fixes

  • Fully seat and secure the solenoid H connector.
  • Clean corroded terminals or repair loose connector pins in the H circuit.
  • Repair chafed or strained H wiring that opens intermittently with vibration.
  • Replace solenoid H if its coil resistance becomes unstable or falls outside specification.
  • Service the H valve-body passage if tests point to intermittent sticking.

Can I keep driving?

Because the fault can return without warning, limit driving if shifts become harsh or delayed and avoid towing or hard acceleration. If the transmission briefly enters limp mode or starts slipping, stop safely and arrange diagnosis.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
